Do not falsely accuse me of something I did not do

It was not me who removed the remnant low parameter from Fantala's article, so please do not accuse me of such.--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:57, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

North Indian ocean date format

Just wanted to say, why didn't you made this edit about years ago? As you may see in previous seasons articles, it is in MDY format. So are you sure about this and do you want me to switch most articles to DMY format? It's ok Meow if I do that by myself, I just feel bored atm in Wiki because of a lack of cyclones. Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:47, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

I used to do this but people tended to revert. I cannot tolerate this time. -- Meow 05:23, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Re: Do not make such low-level mistake again

Sorry Meow I was editing a lot of things simultaneously at that time, and forgot about 01W. Thank you for spotting it and renaming it first. I promise I will make sure the numbering and naming will be right. Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:14, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

Trackmap generator thing

Hi. I am planning to help in making storm tracks for the project. Ok, so far I have 1) Created a GitHub account, 2) went to [git clone git://github.com/titoxd/wptc-track.git this] and 3) Clicked 'Clone or Download'... Am I doing it right so far? If so, since I've already downloaded it, I have 3 files (data, png and tracks). Where do I go and what do I do now? Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:57, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Which operating system are you using now? -- Meow 08:59, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Operating system? When I downloaded it, there was a file called 'wptc-track-master'. Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:07, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes your operating system, Windows, macOS or Linux? -- Meow 09:09, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
I am using a Windows. Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:11, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Alright there or eating cat treats? Anything else? If necessary? Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:13, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
I am not familiar with setting this project in Windows. Maybe you could ask Cyclonebiskit, Krit-tonkla or Supportstorm for help, they are active. -- Meow 13:17, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Typhoon Nepartak (2016)

On 23 July 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Typhoon Nepartak (2016), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a 205 km/h (127 mph) gust of wind in Taitung County, Taiwan, during Typhoon Nepartak (pictured) on July 8, 2016, is the highest recorded in the county? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Typhoon Nepartak (2016). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Typhoon Nepartak (2016)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Updating season timelines

Hi Meow. Just letting you know that recently me and JD had discussed about updating the season timelines, and we confirmed that we should update the timeline if it's the next day as of the UTC time (or update it during or after 00Z). The reason behind this was because I saw many users updating the timeline around the 20-23Z mark, which is too early and has not happened according to that time zone, and therefore I followed them. Then recently I got warned by another user foe doing it, then during the next day, he does it. So it made me confusing. Thanks!! Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:49, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

I never updated before the agency had reported. -- Meow 09:10, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Hello! Since i never have a favor for you, can i have one? Typhoon2013 is using Ipad or something, so i can't have another favor for him. Can you upload the SNPP image of TS Darby, TS Estelle, TS Frank and TD 08E (But now Hurricane Georgette) from the gallery? it can't fit on our laptop. TD outside basin

Hi, Meow and thanks for your edit. Just wondering, the JMA is somehow tracking a TD east of the basin. If the system does not enter the basin, do we add it in or put it in the Other systems section? I'm thinking the Other systems section because this is also what happened in 2010. Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:45, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

JMA mentioned Omeka as a tropical depression west of the International Date Line in 2010. As this system is east of the IDL and considered as a non-tropical low by the Ocean Prediction Center, I doubt we should mention it in the typhoon season article. -- Meow 11:49, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, I was mentioning about another system in that season which the JMA classified it only to the east of the basin. But anyways, of course, if the current TD enters the basin, we'll add it. Typhoon2013 (talk) 11:57, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
I have removed the TD from the PTS since it never moved into the basin and added it to the PHS.Jason Rees (talk) 19:42, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

I think another depression forming in North Indian Ocean. Let me tell you

Meow, I was thinking that a depression over Bangladesh is gonna classify it as Deep Depression BOB 04 . But let me tell you. It was just the remnants of Tropical Storm Dianmu that we monitored on Western Pacific. If the IMD dosen't upgrade it, i was just a fool. But just letting you know. - Nino Marakot (talk) 11:03, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Yes the United States indicates it is Dianmu. It hasn’t entered the Bay of Bengal so I doubt if it will be called BOB 04. -- Meow 11:06, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Image

Yes my reasons matter. Why do you think I reverted you twice. I can easily remove the missing corner and still have a presentable image. And my color correction "theory" is a real thing. Images taken from satellites need atmospheric correction to remove the blue haze that is present in your Himawari-8 image. While I don't have a link to the exact image you posted would look like with this correction, I do have one taken from earlier yesterday. This is close to what the image should look like with with atmospheric correction. Supportstorm (talk) 14:55, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Nope. They add a near-infrared band over images. -- Meow 16:34, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Yeah for good reasoning.

The daytime true color portion of the product is created by first performing a Rayleigh correction on the red, green, and blue visible bands, in addition to the 0.86 micrometer "veggie band." This serves to correct for atmospheric scattering and results in a much more crisp image. Since Himawari's green band is centered at 0.51 micrometers, a bit different than the green band on VIIRS and MODIS (0.55 micrometers), a little information from the 0.86 micrometer band 4 is blended with the 0.51 micrometer band in order to make vegetated areas the correct shade of green. Finally, some information from the 10.4 micrometer band 13 is used to estimate cloud top height and to correct some assumptions related to Rayleigh scattering at steep look angles. At night, a static city lights background derived from the VIIRS Day Night Band is combined with data from the 10.4 micrometer band 13 and the 3.9 micrometer band 7. Liquid water clouds are highlighted by shades of red and ice clouds are shades of gray. The cloud layer is given a variable level of transparency depending on the height of the clouds, with high ice clouds being the least transparent.

From what I can tell that band is used to correct the green channel since apparently the satellite can't capture the true range of the green spectrum. Even more reason I'm against using the uncalibrated Himawari-8 images. Anyway the way you treat me and others certitude is what is making me mad right now. You refuse to even consider outside argument of any kind and I felt I've had similar talks with you before. Supportstorm (talk) 17:58, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Actually near-infrared is not even used at all in the image during daytime hours so I don't know how what you said was relevant. Supportstorm (talk) 18:01, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
What you did are only reverting and considering yours better, aren't they? The colour correction theory may be true, but are colours from the Himawari-8 images really incorrect? Just simply think about this: Is the Earth blue or black?
I am absolutely aware of the resolution of VIIRS images, and I have uploaded VIIRS images many times. The issue of that VIIRS image on August 28 is that the typhoon is on the edge, making it even more blur than the one on that Himawari-8 image. I am also aware of that removing the cut is possible, yet it would make the VIIRS image look too crowded.
Overall, my reasons for using the Himawari-8 image are simply these: Clearness, completeness and not crowded; moreover, my filename is always based on ISO 8601 for internatioalisation. If you think my reasons are not proper, you can let more people judge on this. Being mad for this is unnecessary. -- Meow 01:35, 29 August 2016 (UTC)
It's not that on edge, the entire storm is in frame even with the crop with sparing room. The blurriness only really occurs within the farthest 10% of the image form the center. The colors is my main strife as there is a world of difference between an unprocessed and processed image. Atmospheric correction is meant to reduce haze of particles scattering light and thus make the image clearer and uniformed throughout the scene, so yes the colors are incorrect. The image name standardization is a non issue as I can change it. I'm mad because you straight up told me I was wrong without any consideration of what I was saying. Supportstorm (talk) 02:21, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

Little help if possible

I've noticed you've worked on Template:Infobox hurricane somewhat, and I was wondering if I could get some help with something. I've been trying to create a fictional scale with the inclusion of hypercanes (color and wind speed; which is set to 434 kts, are already set), which I know are fictional right now, but I feel like I wanna make something in my sandbox that documents the first recorded one (imo ive decided to set it in the year 2064). However every possible solution I have tried has resulted in nothing, with the example having still saying "Category 5 major hurricane (SSHWS/NWS)" rather then "Hypercane (SSHWS/HWS)". I was wondering if maybe you can try to help make it so it will work properly? --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 23:00, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

I believe that this should be discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tropical cyclones or I will be considered as vandalism. -- Meow 09:04, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

Did you know?

Did you know that you can easily re-arrange columns and rows in the visual editor?

Screenshot showing a dropdown menu with options for editing the table structure

Select a cell in the column or row that you want to move. Click the arrow at the start of that row or column to open the dropdown menu (shown). Choose either "Move before" or "Move after" to move the column, or "Move above" or "Move below" to move the row.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has mainly worked on a new wikitext editor. They have also released some small features and the new map editing tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the list of work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, releasing the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving language support.

Recent changes

  • You can now set text as small or big.[2]
  • Invisible templates have been shown as a puzzle icon. Now, the name of the invisible template is displayed next to the puzzle icon.[3] A similar feature will display the first part of hidden HTML comments.[4]
  • Categories are displayed at the bottom of each page. If you click on the categories, the dialog for editing categories will open.[5]
  • At many wikis, you can now add maps to pages. Go to the Insert menu and choose the "Maps" item. The Discovery department are adding more features to this area, like geoshapes. You can read more on MediaWiki.org.[6]
  • The "Save" button now says "Save page" when you create a page, and "Save changes" when you change an existing page.[7] In the future, the "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
  • Image galleries now use a visual mode for editing. You can see thumbnails of the images, add new files, remove unwanted images, rearrange the images by dragging and dropping, and add captions for each image. Use the "Options" tab to set the gallery's display mode, image sizes, and add a title for the gallery.[8]

Future changes

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining 10 "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next month. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including Thai, Burmese and Aramaic.

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. The 2017 wikitext editor will look like the visual editor and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices in October 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Let's work together

Do you teach new editors how to use the visual editor? Did you help set up the Citoid automatic reference feature for your wiki? Have you written or imported TemplateData for your most important citation templates? Would you be willing to help new editors and small communities with the visual editor? Please sign up for the new VisualEditor Community Taskforce.

If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly, so that we can notify you when the next issue is ready. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:19, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

1619 Aere JMA BT

Hi, Meow. So according to the JMA BT for Aere, the storm dissipated on Oct 10. Although its remnants re-generated on Oct 13 but only JTWC classified it as a the same system. Do we put Aere's dissipation date on Oct 10 or 14? Also because some say that we follow the RSMC Dates. Typhoon2013 (talk) 06:54, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Aere degenerated into a low-pressure area then reintensified into a tropical depreesion. If we want to follow RSMC Tokyo strictly, we should use October 10. -- Meow 08:18, 23 November 2016 (UTC)
Yea I do know that. Otherwise we wait for the JTWC BT? Though it's most likely they classified its re-generation still at 22W/Aere/same system. This is going to be quite a (small) problem don't you think? Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:30, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Nicole image

Hi and I've decided to see you because you're pretty much the "image expert" in this project, hehe. But anyways, for Hurricane Nicole, I've lately uploaded an image of it because that image was closer to peak and during that time it was a Category 3 (there are no images I could find during Cat4/peak). Also the other image, or the original one was during Category 2 intensity. What I've thought is that if there are no images during its peak, then the image should be close to peak and its highest intensity. So apparently I added in the image in Nicole's infobox though someone is trying to revert me and don't disagree. Image could be "low-quality" he said, but I don't know so help I guess, thanks. 9z disturbance summaries

Although advisories for particular tropical cyclones are limited to the 6-hourly times, the daily tropical disturbance summary is issued at 9z and may contain information different from the advisories themselves. For example, the summary says Donna has 85-knot 10-minute winds, whereas the preceding tropical disturbance advisory for Donna indicated 75 knots. In particular, it explicitly mentions 9z as the time of analysis. As this is still the RSMC's word, it counts.--Jasper Deng (talk) 11:24, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks I got it, but please do not use “9z”. This is far from ISO 8601. -- Meow 11:50, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [9]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [10]

Other changes:

  • You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [11]
  • The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [12]
  • The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the "hamburger" icon) for quicker access. [13] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [14]
  • You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [15]
  • Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [16]
  • The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [17]
  • A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [18]
  • There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [19]

Future changes

  • The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [20]
  • The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. [21]
  • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [22]

Ex-Tropical cyclone

Hi, Meow. I just want to clarify or know what is an "ex-tropical cyclone"? If a storm, or cyclone (mostly used by BoM), had weakened to an "exTc", does it mean it weakened into a remnant low, or does it still count that it is still active? Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:08, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

It means a former tropical cyclone which is below the tropical cyclone (gale) strength instead of characteristics in the basin. The bureau describes all tropical lows ‘ex-tropical cyclones’ if they have been designated a name. Everything ‘ex-’ is used to be something, yet it doesn’t mean anything else. -- Meow 14:20, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Sorry for the very late reply. So therefore, if a cyclone is downgraded into an "ex-tc", we still consider that it is still active right? Typhoon2013 (talk) 21:53, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
For the Australian region and South Pacific basins, it is technically a tropical low with a name.  Meow 09:58, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
In Ella's case its not a tropical low - Nadi mentioned in their routine forecasts for Fiji that Ella had been downgraded straight to an area of low pressure. Generally ive noticed over the years that Nadi would indicate if it was still a tropical depression within the Tropical Disturbance Summuary.Jason Rees (talk) 10:31, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
Thus, it becomes a challenge for us to determine the nature of a cyclone for those two basins. We have to refer to different advisories.  Meow 10:36, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
Personally I think we as the international community need to provide a list of comments/actionable things that need to change with both basins for example more consistency with what a system is called. Also at times it is worth looking at other bulletins like the marine Bulletin or Fiji's general weather summary to find the better info.Jason Rees (talk) 11:19, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

Winston

While I agree with some of your reasoning, I disagree that it shouldn't be cited because it is notable and is official, regardless of its circustances. Also, the Dvorak technique there's a lower bias on minimum sea-level pressure for the Western Pacific, but that doens't impede us to call Typhoon Tip as the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded worldwide, while that by your arguments, it wouldn't be proper to compare it to storms from other basins. ABC paulista (talk) 16:32, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Your statement is not completely accurate as NHC and CPHC never use 10-minute sustained winds. What you referred to is the original conversion from the Dvorak technique, yet JMA has already switched to its own conversion table since early 1990s. According to that table, CI8.0 equals to 888 hPa. Moreover, the central pressure of Tip is observed, not estimated. 🐱💬 18:12, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
I still don't know if Winston's stats were purely estimated or more based on local observations during its landfalls on Fiji, but most of both Tip's and Winston's competition had their intensities estimated per satellite measurements, so my point still stands.
Moreover, this record is official, hence more verifiable than any supposed bias on estimation techniques. ABC paulista (talk) 21:39, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
You didn’t get my main point: There are four responsible areas that 10-minute sustained winds are not used. Tip’s intensity is completely based on observations as the Dvorak technique was not a standard in 1979. 🐱💬 10:49, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Doing it manually ?

Hi, again. So this same user says "to do it manually" for the current infobox in the movement section. In the WPac, like we always do before, we put the "convert" template, so it could convert it for us, right? But this guy wants to do it manually. Would you still want to use the "convert" template or have a change and do it manually like the PHS and AHS basins? Typhoon2013 (talk) 22:23, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

That user should start a topic in the WikiProject talk page. 🐱💬 00:57, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Do you still upload?

Hi, Meow and it's kinda been a long time. But do you still upload images, or edit? Because I barely see your name in the View history box. I'm just asking because there is someone else who uploads images too but his versions are not clear, plus he prefers his images than the gallery versions instead, and I'm like having an "edit war" in these images. Like these files: [Eugene_2017-07-09_1815Z.jpg] and [Nanmadol 2017-07-03 0512Z.jpg]. Typhoon2013 (talk) 07:54, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Usually I don’t contribute a lot on weaker, Northeast Pacific and North Atlantic systems unless they are really important or very strong. I have checked the two images and the gallery pictures are proper enough to use. Some editors wasted time to crop or ‘enlarge’.  🐱💬 08:04, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
@Typhoon2013: I hate to say this, but lots of what that person uploaded are disasters... How can people accept something like that?  🐱💬 05:48, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
Sad, but true. No offense to that person as well.. but I am just here following the guidelines of the project and following what you guys used to do. Not just about images, but this as well.Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:54, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

What site?

Hi again :P. Thank you for updating the PTS as well, but what site do you use? Because JMA still doesn't track the 15th TD based on their site. Typhoon2013 (talk) 07:48, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

Pre-1900 typhoons?

Hi, I noticed one of your hobbies is translating. I recently acquired a book listing several hundred typhoons affecting Guangdong Province from the year 975 into the 1900s, which is pretty much entirely in (traditional) Chinese. I had planned on using it as a starting point to write an article/list about Pre-1900 WPAC typhoons, but it's a big task. Are you interested in working on it? I'm also not sure how I should format the dates either, because most of the typhoons only list a (presumably) Chinese lunar calendar year, but several important ones list a day which can be converted. atomic7732 22:52, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

LAND02 or BOB05?

Is the system in the Nio basin right now a land depression? Because it seems like the system formed over water so wouldn't it be a BOB system? Typhoon2013 (talk) 00:14, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

IMD never called it BOB 05 and never mentioned it as a system over the Bay of Bengal. Those editors are wrong. 🐱💬 04:59, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the clarification. What I am really concerned is that the Nio articles are 'dead' with no users editing it, aside from anon users. Someone should join the project and help for the Nio cyclones. I'm sorry but you'll understand that I'm more of a WPac updater. Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:44, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

"Fake News"

Hi, Meow. An anon user had stated that this is "fake news"? Is this true? Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:40, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

I cannot read Vietnamese directly. Helped by Google Translate, I presume it should be a piece of news reporting there’s fake news. 🐱💬 11:15, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

29W

Hello, again. In the case for 29W, did it (briefly) enter the Nio basin? It states that the WPac extends up to 100E, although Nio extends up to the Malay Peninsula. 29W passed the 100E mark, but the JTWC issued their last advisory just over the Peninsula. So could we at least mention this or it did not really entered the Nio basin? Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:19, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

For now it stays out per the rules on original research, since it didn’t enter the NIO. If the IMD/JTWC start warning on it again or mention it in BT as in the NIO, then we can add it in.Jason Rees (talk) 09:57, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
JTWC reported that 29W had dissipated over the Malay Peninsula, and IMD never upgraded it to a depression. 🐱💬 10:00, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
@Jason Rees: and Meow. Well this (may) be a problem. As of the majority of PTS articles, it states that "The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean to the north of the equator between 100°E and the 180th meridian." Also majority of Nio articles states that "...and west of the Malay Peninsula." There is still a portion of the Pacific basin (or Gulf of Thailand) around 98-99E. The JMA classifies that surpassing the 100E is a different basin. This may be not our problem, but possibly the agencies, as they do not state it clearly where the border of the WPac and Nio is (whether its by the 100E mark, or the Malay Peninsula). Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:51, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

I'm curious.

I couldn't help but wonder about your intentions behind your open and sexual description about yourself on your userpage. Care to talk about it?--VintageHygrometer (talk) 12:53, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

ANI Experiences survey

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

As you said “I have no intentions of being further involved.”🤔 🐱💬 13:01, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
Quite frankly I think some of the issues U2 have with Typhoon2013 are pathetic and not worth getting involved with. For example him you guys taking issue with him licensing an image from a NASA/NOAA satellite as a NASA image. Also who cares if TY2013 uploads an image that is square and not rectangle, commons is large enough to host both.Jason Rees (talk) 13:51, 31 December 2017 (UTC)
I didn’t talk about NASA/NOAA, as Suomi NPP and other JPSS satellites are of a joint subject between NASA and NOAA. What I mentioned is that he did not distinguish VIIRS from MODIS. 🐱💬 13:56, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Did you know?

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Screenshot showing some changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Recent changes

  • The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
  • The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [23]
  • Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [24]
  • The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

Let's work together

  • The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
  • Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.
  • The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <references /> or the plain (no parameters) {{reflist}} template. If you edit a different wiki, you can request multi-column support for your wiki. [25]
  • If you aren't reading this in your preferred language, then please help us with translations! Subscribe to the Translators mailing list or contact us directly. We will notify you when the next issue is ready for translation. Thank you!
